France and Spain remain popular retirement destinations

14 August 2007

France and Spain continue to feature as the destinations where British pensioners would most like to live after their retirement.

A recent Bank of Scotland International (BOSI) survey found that the two countries are the most popular countries in Europe to retire in, among the 31 per cent of pensioners who have considered moving abroad.

New Zealand topped the poll of the most preferred country to live in overseas, followed by Australia in second place and Canada which tied with France in third.

However, BOSI said that British pensioners were more likely to see their pension increase in line with inflation if they recive it within an EU country.

BOSI managing director Tony Wilcox said: "When retiring abroad it is important to have looked into your pension arrangements and to have adequate financial planning in place."

Financial services group Belvins Franks recently noted that residing in France or Spain for some time could provide more mortgage options available to people if they want to buy a property there when they retire.
